WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is a Japanese energy touch therapy for relaxation and pain relief that also promotes healing *. Although Reiki is "hands-on", unlike massage, Reiki is administered through a very gentle touch. While the patient is seated or lying down on a massage table and fully clothed, the practitioner’s hand are placed along energy centres and pathways on the head, neck, shoulders, upper chest, abdomen, back, legs, palms and feet (similar to those used in acupuncture).

It is a healing approach that uses light touch from the practitioner to channel healing energy to the recipient. Traditionally, it has been used as a very gentle yet effective way to relieve physical and emotional pain and to promote spiritual clarity. Reiki also speeds the healing process and balances the body's energy. Reiki works on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels by restoring the lost balance between the mind, body and spirit.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF REIKI?

Reiki is believed to have begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. Seers in the Orient studied energies and developed a system of sounds and symbols for universal healing energies. Various healing systems, which crossed many different cultures, emerged from this single root system. Unfortunately, the original source itself was forgotten.

Dr. Mikao Usui (August 15th 1865 - March 9th 1926), a Japanese Christian educator in Kyoto, Japan, rediscovered the root system in the mid-to late 1800s. He began an extensive twenty-one-year study of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders. He also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit). He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system, which activate the universal life energy for healing.

During the early 1920, on Mount Kurama, Mikao Usui underwent a metaphysical experience during a 21 days of fasting, prayer and meditation, becoming empowered to use these sounds and symbols for healing. He named this form of healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan until his death on March 9th, 1926. The tradition was passed through several grandmasters of Reiki such as Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, and Phyllis Lei Furumoto.

Mount Kurama

Mikao Usui trained about 2000 people in Reiki. In 1922, he opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo and performed commendable healing work the following year when many people were injured in a serious earthquake. He founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai association to promote Reiki and left behind a small number of Reiki teachers. On of them was Chujiro Hayashi who trained Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the West in 1938.

There are many forms of Reiki being practiced now. The two main systems are:

  1. Usui Reiki System of Natural Healing

  2. Reiki of 7 Levels

Other Reiki systems will greatly improve the efficency of the Reiki treatments. Here are some of the most important being taught:

  1. Karuna

  2. Kundalini Reiki

  3. Tummo Reiki

  4. Seichim of 7 Levels

  5. Imara Reiki

The Usui Reiki System of Natural Healing balances and strengthens the body's energy, promoting its ability to heal itself. Reiki started to be known in the Western world in the mid-1970s. Since then its use has spread dramatically worldwide.

THE FIVE REIKI PRINCIPLES

Mikao Usui, the founder of Usui Reiki Ryoho, defined 5 Reiki principles:

"Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Just for today, be filled with gratitude for the many blessings you receive.
Just for today, devote yourself to your work.
Just for today, be kind to every living being.

Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer. Pray these words to your heart and chant these words with your mouth. Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind."
